Flavelle Rink Update – June 2023

June 2023

We had a great season of skating and hockey!

I believe Fairview may have been the one of the last communities still skating so late into the season.  There was an army (actually about 12) volunteers that came out for the take down of the boards and clean up.  I can’t THANK YOU ALL enough for all your help through the season.  From the volunteers that show up when we need extra hands for a flood, to the ones that just show up in the middle of the night with some hot water to patch a hole they saw.

Thanks to Jason Mohler stepping up to be in charge of the rink this year, I can assure you now that we will have it back for next season as well.  I will still be helping and a liaison for the Rink Crew to FCA.

To end the season officially I would like to share a story I heard during the take down last month.

Jason’s son probably used the rinks more than anyone.  Jack was out there honing his hockey and skating skills daily.  While he was on the ice there were plenty of other kids who were older playing hockey like Adam Lima-Coehol & Mick Saruwatari (also Wolverine Hockey Players).  Jason was thanking Adam for the time he spent sharing his knowledge and working with Jack.  Apparently, Jack’s hockey coach asked Jason if he was putting Jack into other hockey schools or clinics because Jack had progressed so much and got so much better with his shooting that he assumed that he must be getting professional help.  I have to say that there is a bunch of time and hard work that goes into creating and maintaining the outdoor rink, but stories like these are exactly why we do it.

I look forward to seeing everyone next year.  DONT FORGET!  If you want to get on the volunteer call list for the rink please contact me or find us on Facebook at “Flavelle Rink Crew

What a busy place!

The rinks have been great over the big temperature changes in February and early March. We didn’t get many opportunities to run the Zamboni, but it held up well. As we come up to the end of the season, we will be looking for volunteers to help out. If you are interested, please reach out to me at wayne.mcneely@fairviewcommunity.ca.
Speaking of volunteers, I want to thank all those who helped out this year with both the big and the little things. They all add up, and it was great to see some new faces jump in when needed. For example, the other day I met a young man named Riker who eagerly helped us clean off the rink. I know many more pitch in when needed. Huge shoutout to my man Riker and all rink users for stepping up!

Please note that we are looking for someone to take over rink duties for next year. I will still stay on in a lesser capacity to help out and guide the new person in charge. You do not need to be on the community association board to do this. I cannot guarantee that if we don’t have someone else step up that we will be able to have the rinks next year. Below are the usual rink duties, and I am available anytime to discuss!

  • Arrange set up and take down of the boards.
  • Coordinate floods with water trucks.
  • Coordinate other volunteers for rink floods (I can assist with the Zamboni).
  • Regular inspections of the rinks (checking for holes and cracks) then arranging to repair or talk to volunteers to repair.

I would still be available to take care of City requirements and permits (Adopt-A-Rink program), payment for water, and other items required, etc. You would have support.
