President’s Message

March 2024

Spring is in the air! And your community association is organizing our spring events!

Our annual membership drive will be running from April 5 – 14, 2024. If you’d like to volunteer please reach out!

Memberships are always available on our website at FAIRVIEWCOMMUNITY.ca/membership and during the membership drive volunteers will be going door-to-door to sell memberships.

Membership has its privileges! Use your membership to register for Heritage Youth Soccer, join the Parade of Garage Sales, drop off your household garbage at the Spring Fling and VOTE at our AGM on June 4, 2024. All of the membership fees directly support programs and events in our great community.

Stay tuned to our website and social media for registration info and confirmed dates for the Parade of Garage Sales, Spring Fling and our first bottle drive of 2024! You can find us on Instagram @fairviewyyc and on Facebook at Fairview Community.

If you have questions, suggestions for events or would like to volunteer please reach out to me by email.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our community events!

Megan

February 2024

Welcome to February!

Your FCA board is working on finalizing our events for 2024. Spring will kick off with Spring Fling, Parade of Garage Sales, a bottle drive and our annual Membership Drive! Keep an eye on our website and social media for updates and more information.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help make these events a success. Extra hands to help set up, direct traffic, and take down will be needed. The crews always have a great time, and it is an awesome way to meet other people in the community.

Our monthly meetings are open to community members, if you’d like to know more about our meetings, or have a topic for us, reach out to me at president@fairviewcommunity.ca.

We look forward to our spring events and being out in the community with our neighbours!

Megan

January 2024

Happy New Year Fairviewers!

Thank you for a wonderful year full of community events, connecting with neighbours and fun volunteer experiences.

Recently our amazing team of rink volunteers set up boards, tarps and the seating for our outdoor rink in Flavelle Park. Thanks to all who came out! The volunteers work hard all season to keep the rink in tip-top shape for everyone to enjoy. Please be mindful of other skaters and respect the space. We’ve included a few reminders in this newsletter so we can make the skating experience positive for everyone.

The community association hosted our Bowl with Santa event at Toppler Bowl on Sunday December 10, 2023. Thanks to our awesome organizers, Melody Eisenbart and Alicia Davis for coordinating the event and organizing treats and crafts, in addition to all the bowling and fun! This is a great community event that brings together our residents as well as some local businesses like Candy Multiverse in Acadia Plaza, Olde Fair Popcorn and of course, Toppler Bowl.

December was a busy month for the City of Calgary Mobility (Roads) team. The damaged curbs and bollards along Fairmount Drive were fixed and concrete repairs were completed. Yellow and black reflective signs have also been added to the bump out curbs to improve visibility along the route. Fairmount Drive continues to be a busy thoroughfare, providing access to Fairview residents, schools, NaAC and various businesses along the way.

Do you have an idea for an event in Fairview? Or a suggestion for a newsletter article? Please reach out to me by email.

All the best in 2024,

Megan

December 2023

We are getting closer to the end of 2023 and the FCA board has lots of fun programs and events in store, even in the winter!

In October we had our casino night, which is our main fundraiser for community events, programs, and projects. We also had a chance in October to attend open houses for future developments around Fairview, including Midtown Station and Heritage Plaza (more information can be found on our website at fairviewcommunity.ca/planning). The FCA board also established a Development and Planning Committee to help share information with Fairviewers on important development projects and provide feedback to developers and city planners.

We hosted the City of Calgary’s Mobile Adventure Playground in Fairview Park in November, and Bowling with Santa takes place December 10. Our holiday elves (volunteers) will also return this year to observe the “festiveness” of each street in Fairview in mid-December (date subject to weather conditions). The elves will be checking for holiday lights and decorations, so be sure to light up the night for bragging rights as the most festive street in Fairview!

Winter weather also means the return of our outdoor rink at Flavelle Park. The dates for setting up and for skating are weather-dependent. Our 2023-24 rinkmaster (Jason) and our previous rinkmaster (Wayne) have outlined some of the tasks that go into our awesome outdoor rink. You can find more details in this newsletter. If you’d like to know more, or would like to volunteer, reach out to Jason at rink@fairviewcommunity.ca.

We continue to see the evolution of the Sparking Lot in Fairview Park. At the end of October, our outdoor ping pong table was delivered! The community association has left a few paddles and balls on site – please leave the equipment as you found it for others to enjoy. After going through the development permit process with the City of Calgary, our storage space was delivered and put on site. The sea can will be painted in the spring of 2024, when the weather permits. This is an exciting milestone, since it will allow us to store things like our rink boards, etc. in a secure space and in the spring will be the hub for activities and events taking place in the Sparking Lot.

The FCA board is volunteer-based, and each member has a passion for contributing to their community. Behind every event, newsletter article, grant application, and meeting, is a crew of amazing volunteers. If you have ideas or questions, would like to come to a meeting, or are interested in joining the board, you can contact us at president@fairviewcommunity.ca or come to our next meeting! We meet the first Tuesday of every month.

Best wishes and happy holidays,

Megan

November 2023

It has been an exciting few months for the Fairview Community Association.

Board members and volunteers put on a great Movie in the Park event, sought out volunteers and held our Casino Fundraiser at the Elbow River Casino and have had several productive board meetings. We are looking forward to cooler weather, which brings the building of our ice rink in Flavelle Park, a Mobile Adventures Playground at Fairview Park, Bowling with Santa, and our annual street by street festive lights count!

Board meetings are held from September through June on the first Tuesday of each month (with some exceptions), and all Fairview residents are invited to attend (contact me for details).

The Community Association meetings cover a variety of topics, such as:

  • Event planning, like our upcoming Bowling with Santa at Toppler Bowl on December 10 from 3-5pm. We are also discussing options for an event early in 2024 and planning our events for 2024,
  • Adopt-a-Rink planning and coordinating. The Board is working with our new Rink Master, Jason Mohler, and outgoing Rink Master, Wayne McNeely; on coordinating the set up and reaching out for volunteers,
  • Ongoing large projects, like the activation of the Sparking Lot in behind NaAC,
  • 60plusCollective, where we are looking for ideas and events that would be interesting for our 60+ residents,
  • We often have guests, including Fairview residents, who have brought forward concerns like heavy truck traffic and problem neighbours,
  • Our Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator (NPC) attends all our meetings. They are our City contact and conduit for all sorts of information relating to Community Associations and event planning (including grant funding and applications),
  • The Ward 11 office contributes to our meeting with updates and information (in-person when schedules align),
  • The board reviews development and planning applications that have been submitted to the City and impact Fairview and surrounding areas (for more information, see the ‘Planning’ page on our website at fairviewcommunity.ca/planning),
  • We also cover more administrative aspects of the Community Association, like going over financial reports, Social Media and newsletter content planning,

This list is not exhaustive, and we aim to be responsive to what is going on in Fairview. If any of these topics interest you and you’d like to join a great community team, let us know!

Megan, President
