We Cook You Eat-ing in Fairview!
A significant anniversary is about to take place in Fairview for a business wanting to become more engaged with our community. On September 25th, We Cook You Eat, a great local eatery and catering business on Fairmount Drive, will celebrate their first year in our community and things are looking good for many more anniversaries to come.
Owner and chef Millie Blanco combined two loves of her life in this endeavour – cooking and business. An accountant by training, Millie holds a full-time job as a senior accountant at a northwest Calgary car dealership and does some IT work on the side! It’s hard to believe it, but Millie also does all the cooking at We Cook You Eat, working very hard to get meals prepared for the retail and catering business. She also did many of the renovations herself to spruce up a once-dingy strip mall location into a clean, bright and open establishment. Her son, Miguel, also helped co-found the business, assisted with the renovations and manages much of the retail and marketing aspects of the business, making this a true family affair.
The name of the business originated out of Millie’s philosophy of simplicity – good homestyle food cooked with fresh ingredients all made from recipes from memory… for the enjoyment of her customers. Food purchasing is done through as many local businesses as possible with an eye for fresh, quality ingredients, not bulk, tasteless food.
Her business plan recognizes that people are busy and don’t always have two hours to prepare a meal or go to a decent restaurant, but still want good quality, healthy, stick-to-your-ribs food that is affordable. What’s most remarkable, though, is the customizing of meals that she has to offer – with reasonable notice you can request nearly anything by special order for catering or individual meals and Millie will whip it up – just ask!
Customers can stop on their way out of Fairview in the morning for a quick coffee provided by Paradise Mountain Organic Coffee, grab a breakfast bowl or breakfast wrap or indulge in a real fruit smoothie. For lunch, patrons can enjoy one of the many sandwiches or paninis, all made with roasted-in-house meat, no deli meat here. For dinner, stop by and pick up a prepared meal such as her most popular shepard’s pie, chicken or beef chilli, risotto, pulled pork or delectable soups, to name a few.
We Cook You Eat’s catering business has grown very fast over the past year – remarkably with no advertising, relying on just word of mouth, which certainly says a lot. It is refreshing to see the enthusiasm that Millie has for her food and products. Her customers like the personal service, developing a relationship with Millie and her customized food that are lacking in this industry. And, of course, their customers love the food!
What’s on the horizon for We Cook You Eat? Millie would like to create meal plans for individuals or families who won’t be able to prepare good quality meals for several days in a row and also develop a kid’s menu with smaller portions and less spicy recipes as well as launch their website which is under construction (www.wecookyoueat.ca)
Giving back to the community is also part of the philosophy of We Cook You Eat. They recently helped cater a lunch for the Flint Playground Build and Millie and co. would like to extend a 20% discount to all seniors in the community and a 10% discount to all Fairview Community Association members (ID required!).
We Cook You Eat is open and ready to serve you Monday to Friday, 6am to 9pm and Saturday 9am to 8pm. They can be contacted at 403-263-4008 or email email@example.com.
